My Health Minnesota -> Go Local Celebrates Birthday

My Health Minnesota -> Go Local, a free database of health services throughout Minnesota, recently celebrated its first birthday! The project is sponsored by the University of Minnesota Health Sciences Libraries, the Mayo Clinic Libraries, and the MINITEX Library Information Network, in collaboration with the National Library of Medicine.

Minnesota citizens can use Go Local to find more than 5,000 hospitals, nursing homes, physicians, support groups, pharmacists, libraries, rehabilitation programs, and other health services in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, plus reliable health information about a multitude of diseases and conditions from MedlinePlus. The database is searchable by location, diseases/health issues, and providers/facilities/health services. My Health Minnesota -> Go Local continues to grow daily as we add resources throughout the state.

In its first year, My Health Minnesota -> Go Local has been used by people all over Minnesota, plus across the United States and in other parts of the world. You're invited to check out this resource for yourself at: http://medlineplus.gov/minnesota. Please direct questions and comments or suggest resources to be included by e-mailing golocal@umn.edu.

New Project Muse Interface

The new Project Muse interface went live on Sunday, August 17:

Project MUSE is pleased to announce the release of a new web interface, enhanced with many features to aid ease of navigation, expand discovery, and encourage deeper interaction with the wealth of scholarly content offered by MUSE.

Online now at http://muse.jhu.edu, the new site design offers several new tools and resources for scholars, librarians, and publishers. MUSE offers full text access to current content from nearly 400 high quality journals in the humanities and social sciences, from some 100 not-for-profit publishers, and the web site's improved features will help users find, utilize and share this content more readily and efficiently.

A highlight of MUSE's new web site is wider range of functionality at the individual journal article level, including the ability to email a link, find more articles from the same author(s), and share the article via popular social bookmarking services. Color indicators allow users to easily determine to which content they have full text access, at both the journal and article level.

Improved navigation in the site's informational pages makes it easier for researchers, librarians, and publishers to access tools such as training guides, usage statistics, journal holdings information, and technical documentation. A new search feature also offers the ability to search only the informational pages, to quickly locate key details such as pricing, upcoming journal additions, or supported technologies. An entirely new section is dedicated to information for current and prospective publishers of journals in MUSE.

Amazon and Google Turn the eBook Page

This fall Amazon will release the Kindle, a device which will allow users to wirelessly tap into Amazon's eBook store.  The device has the advantage over older readers that have to be connected to a computer.

More Kindle

Not to be outdone, Google will soon offer eBook users the opportunity to pay for the full version of copyrighted works.  Up until this point Google has made only limited excerpts of copyrighted books available as part of their Google Book Search Partner Program.  Unlike the Kindle, Google's eBooks must be read online.
